Many people probably think that is all there is to blogging. You will probably spend about 5-10 minutes reading a blog post, but never think about all the work that goes into creating a single post. Today, I’m giving you an inside scoop on the world of blogging. We’re going to go behind the scenes to see what it really takes to run a blog.
STEP 1: Getting Inspiration for Blog Post Ideas
Sometimes I have an endless stream of blog post ideas, and other times I will have no ideas at all. However, that’s part of the beauty of blogging. Ideas can come from virtually anything: to fill a need, from reading other blogs, or scrolling on social media. For me, the goal is to create posts that will benefit or teach others something new. Sometimes even shopping at my local 7-Eleven and seeing beautiful bottles of LIFEWTR can spark some inspiration for me.
STEP 2: Shopping for Supplies
After coming up with a list of blog post ideas, it’s time to go shopping! I’ve literally spent hours in craft stores trying to decide on the perfect paint colors, brushes, markers, etc. I always look forward to shopping for blog supplies because this is when I start to see my ideas come to life. Other things that I am often on the lookout for are staging props. I love using small plants, beautiful magazines, and lots of pretty stationery!
STEP 3: Taking Pictures
Taking pictures for my blog is one of my favorite parts of blogging! I absolutely love being able to put my creatively to the test. Getting that perfect shot takes a great deal of time, effort, and lots of trial and error. What you usually see is the end result: beautifully styled photos with perfect lighting. However, what you’re seeing is only half the story of what is really happening behind the scenes. The truth is that blogging can get messy. About 80 percent of the time my desk and bed look more like the pictures on the right side.
Since I work a full-time job from Monday-Friday, I shoot all of my pictures on Saturday and Sunday morning. This doesn’t leave me with much time to sit down and eat a wholesome breakfast. Blogging is fast paced and can be mentally and physically demanding. Often times I even forget to take a sip of water! That’s when LIFEWTR comes in to save the day.
The fun designs on the bottles help to encourage me to stay creative and inspired. As much as I love blogging, I have to constantly remind myself to take a break and take care of my well being. LIFEWTR is purified water that is pH balanced, with electrolytes for taste. This makes it super easy for me to guzzle enough water to help me stay hydrated, and fuel my creativity.
STEP 4: Editing
After taking all the shots I need for a post, it’s time to start editing. Editing can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. When I first started blogging, I took tons and tons of pictures. It made editing a big pain in the behind because I could never decide which pictures to keep. Now I like to limit the number of photos I take and focus more on getting various angles. The only programs I use to edit are Lightroom, BeFunky, and PicMonkey.
STEP 5: Writing the Post
I have a love-hate relationship with the writing portion of blogging. At times the words just flow smoothly like melted butter, and at other times it’s like pulling teeth. It always helps me to take my pictures first because it allows me to tell a visual story and fill in the words later. I also love writing a quick outline in my notebook, so I don’t miss any important points. It’s important to stay creative and inspired as well.
STEP 6: Hitting the Publish Button
After my blog post has been properly formatted with pictures and writing, I will do a final run through to make sure there are no errors. I am absolutely terrible at proofreading, so I will usually ask my boyfriend or a close friend to proofread my post for me. After spending hours staring at the same post, it’s always nice to have a fresh pair of eyes double check everything. Once everything looks good, it’s time to hit the publish button!
STEP 7: Marketing Your Post
You probably think that after hitting ‘publish’ it’s time to sit back, relax, and watch your blog views skyrocket. How I wish it was that easy! You can spend hours creating the most amazing posts with the most beautiful pictures, but if you don’t market your post, not many people will see it. Marketing your post, and your blog as a whole, is crucial if you want your blog to grow. Some of the best ways to market your blog are to connect with other bloggers, submit to popular websites, and utilize social media networks.
As you can see, there is much more to blogging than meets the eye. Serious bloggers spend hours and hours creating great content for amazing readers like you!
